Sole Trader – handy checklist

Sole Trader – handy checklist

Taking your first steps into being self-employed as a Sole Trader, MBIE have put together a fantastic guide with useful links to guide you through your first steps.

Leaine’s key suggestions are:

  • Open a designated business bank account – even better have 2! (one for operations, the second for tax provision)
  • Seek professional advice. There are lots of free resources out there, add some paid professional help into the mix too.
  • Have some money in reserve. There will be lots of unexpected and one-off costs to get things started. Be prepared to have minimal or no income for the first month or two.
  • Be compliant from the beginning. Having the correct policies in place will show your professionalism and that you are serious about being in business. Health and Safety, Terms of Trade, Privacy are three examples that come to mind.

Here’s the checklist. Have you covered all the bases?
